The La Grande Bouffe (1973) is the best known film of director Marco
Ferreri. Part of the reason is that it was steeped in controversy at
Cannes, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize, and was nominated for a Golden
Palm.
Plot
Summary
Marco Ferreri’s scandalous classic sees four world-weary, middle-aged
men (superbly portrayed by Marcello Mastroianni, Ugo Tognazzi, Michel
Piccoli and Philippe Noiret) decide to gorge themselves to death in one
final orgiastic weekend full of gourmet food, call girls and a hefty,
lusty schoolteacher. Over 30 years later, this blackly humorous parable
of modern society’s collapse continues to challenge audiences’
sensibilities and test the limits of bad taste.
