is Special about this DVD?
A compelling, Oscar-nominated Russian
arthouse favorite, that is particularly rare worldwide. This
DVD is All Regions,
designed for an English Audience (packaging, menu system, subtitles,
etc). The film won just about every soviet film award there is, and was
nominated for best foreign film Oscar and Golden Globe. Ebert and
Berardinelli agree at three stars each. This is a lovely bit of film
making. All of the characters, even the thief, are sympathetic in some
ways, Yekaterina Rednikova is adorable, and Misha Filipchuk does well
with the challenging role.
Plot
Summary
"The Thief" is told through the eyes of a six year old boy, Misha
Filipchuk. His father, a Russian WW II veteran, died six months before
he was born. He was born on the side of a dirt road, and life was not
pleasant for him and his mother, Yekaterina Rednikova, until they met a
Russian officer, Vladimir Mashkov, on a train. Before the ride was
over, they had joined into a makeshift family. The two did not yet
realize that they simply made his actual job of thief easier. The scam
was simple. Rent a room, give everyone tickets to the circus, and skip
town with all of their belongings. While mom was thrilled with him as a
boyfriend and lover, she was not happy when she learned his true
occupation. Meanwhile, Misha didn't much like him. They must move from
town to town, and Misha doesn't always get along with the local kids.
Things come to a head when Mashkov is arrested, which eventually leads
to a very dark ending.
